We recently discovered a series of very moving photos from a photographer, Tadej Znidarcic, who documented the severe issues facing pregnant mothers in Uganda and other sub-Saharan African countries. Taken in July 2011, the images show the stark reality for women giving birth in the rural settings of East Central Africa.
The introductory note on the New York Times website almost says it all:
“About 80 percent of the world’s maternal deaths occur in just 21 nations, 15 of which are in sub-Saharan Africa, according to a 2010 study on maternal mortality by the University of Washington. Uganda was among them. About 5,200 women died from pregnancy related causes here in 2008, the researchers estimated.”

At Action for Reproductive Health, we are pleased to see such a high profile news organisation like the New York Times covering the difficulties in managing reproductive and maternal health in rural Uganda.
